Abstract

The study investigated the impact of fuel subsidy removal on students’ learning activities in some selected tertiary institutions in Katsina State, Nigeria. Three research questions were raised and three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The target population of the study consisted 10,300 final students 2025/2026 academic session from three randomly selected tertiary institutions in Katsina State, Nigeria. Sample size of 385 were drawn from the population using Taro Yamene formula for sample size determination. The instrument for data collection was researchers’ made questionnaire titled: Impact of Fuel Subsidy Removal on Students’ Learning Activities among Tertiary Institutions Questionnaire (IFSRSLATIQ). Descriptive statistics was used to answer research questions while Chi-Square was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was found that fuel subsidy removal has significant impact on students’ access to learning materials, school attendance and punctuality to lectures in the selected tertiary institutions in Katsina State, Nigeria. It was therefore concluded that; fuel subsidy removal without proper plan in place to mitigate the rising cost of living associated with fluctuating fuel pump price, has a significant impact on students’ learning activities in Katsina State. Based on the findings, the study recommended that, The State Government should extend and subsidize campus shuttle buses to reach out different local government areas in order to reduce transport-related absenteeism and lateness to lectures
